Upcoming September 2023 changes for the RC Aircraft community (FRIA)
AIRCRAFT
Drones and Remote Controlled model aircraft are considered a
“Unmanned Aerial Systems”.
As of September 16, 2023 the FAA has mandated that every Unmanned
Aerial System must be equipped with a "transponder" in order to fly.
So after this date it is illegal to fly your RC aircraft, or drone
(weighing more than .55 pounds) out in some random park or your yard
unless it is equipped with the transponder.
Being a member of the RCACF however, your Unmanned Aerial System
(your aircraft) will be permitted to legally fly within the
confines of our flying field without said transponder when the
RCACF receives our FRIA exemption.
However, you still need to register your aircraft with
RFAA DroneZone.
The identification number must be on each aircraft, visible without
disassembling any part of the model
The RCACF has met the application requirements (being an AMA
chartered club) and applied for the FRIA designation in January of
2023. We expect to receive our FRIA designation by the September
2023 deadline.
PILOTS
All recreational flyers must pass the
FAA Trust test, earning the TRUST certificate. This
certificate must be on your person at all times you are operating
your aircraft as law enforcement officers may ask to see your TRUST
certificate.
